About
This project is a demo merchant storefront built for the ETHGlobal hackathon to showcase how WakaPay can power real-world crypto commerce. It simulates a modern online store where users can browse different product types, add items to a cart, and complete payment through a secure WakaPay checkout flow. Behind the scenes, the app creates signed checkout sessions, redirects users to hosted crypto payment, and listens for payment webhooks to confirm transactions and trigger customer notifications. For a competition jury, the key idea is that this is not just a static UI demo, but an end-to-end proof of how merchants can integrate WakaPay into a production-style e-commerce experience for digital goods, subscriptions, services, tickets, and physical products.
How it's made
It is built as a Next.js web application with a marketplace-style frontend and a lightweight backend layer inside the same app. The frontend handles product browsing, filtering, cart management, and the checkout trigger, while the backend exposes API routes that prepare payment requests for WakaPay. When a user starts checkout, the server signs the payload with HMAC using the merchant credentials, sends it to the WakaPay/Wakari checkout API, and receives a hosted checkout_url for redirection. The project also includes a webhook endpoint that verifies Wakapay signatures, processes payment status events, and sends confirmation or reminder emails through SMTP. In short, it combines a modern React-based storefront, secure server-side payment integration, webhook handling, and email automation into one end-to-end merchant demo.
