SunChain
Clean Energy Meets DeFi on Ethereum
About
The problem it solves The Problem It Solves: Millions of Africans and developing regions face unreliable and expensive electricity. Centralized grids are inefficient, prone to outages, and exclude rural areas. At the same time, renewable energy projects struggle with funding, transparency, and fair revenue distribution. How SunChain Helps: SunChain uses Ethereum-based DePIN and DeFi integration to make solar energy accessible, transparent, and community-owned. DePIN Layer: Community solar hubs connect through blockchain nodes that record energy generation and consumption data on-chain, ensuring trust and traceability. DeFi Layer: Users can stake tokens, provide liquidity, and earn yield from real-world energy production. Payments & Rewards: Smart contracts automate payments and distribute rewards fairly to energy producers and investors. Transparency: All transactions and energy data are publicly verifiable on the Ethereum blockchain.
How it's made
Challenges we ran into Challenges We Ran Into: 1. Smart Contract Integration: Initially, connecting our solar data oracles with the Ethereum smart contracts caused data mismatch errors. We solved this by implementing an off-chain data verifier that validates IoT readings before committing them on-chain. 2. Gas Efficiency: Recording frequent energy transactions was costly on Ethereum mainnet. To overcome this, we deployed on Optimism L2 for scalability and low-cost microtransactions. 3. DeFi + DePIN Synchronization: Synchronizing DeFi yield mechanics (staking and liquidity pools) with real-world energy production metrics required several iterations. We fixed it using event-based triggers that update rewards dynamically based on actual energy output. 4. Frontend IoT Visualization: Integrating real-time dashboards with blockchain data feeds was complex. We used The Graph protocol to index energy and payment events, improving UI responsiveness and transparency.
