The problem it solves when building a product that is cross-chain, its often difficult to run two seperate blockchains locally for testing. Multichain Hardhat Extension makes it as simple as adding a config file with all chains required for testing. These blockchains are all running in the same hardhat environment.
How it's made
Challenges we ran into figuring how hardhat handles the config file was the most difficult part. once figured I came up with a hack to run multiple chains in the same env
