About
The problem it solves Agriculture plays a significant role in the socio-economic equilibrium of India. According to Central Intelligence Agency factbook [1], about 50% of the Indian workforce is dependent on Agriculture [2]. The problem of low agricultural productivity in India can be attributed to lack of smarter and affordable solutions. A trustless platform for insuring the agriculture sector, a market for encouraging organic farming and by addressing the issues related to having a middleman in the chain will significantly benefit the entire ecosystem - farmers and end consumers. There were no off-the-shelf and affordable solutions in the market to address the forth mentioned issues. We present krishi IoB, a comprehensive blockchain solution to help farmers execute agricultural operations in smarter and efficient ways. krishi IoB-offers a trustless platform based on the parachains (leveraging the substrate eco-system), where each chain is uniquely addressed to solve a problem. Further, these parachains are connected to the polkadot’s relay chain. Usually in an agricultural farm, there will be no Ethernet or WiFi connectivity available; hence a mobile app (krishi IoB App) will be made available for the users (farmers, government bodies, end consumers, insurance bodies, etc) of the blockchain to interact with the blockchain and perform necessary transactions. krishi IoB solution offers the below capabilities: Trustless marketplace for Organic Farming: A marketplace for farmers and end consumers to sell commodities at fair prices and lower transaction fees through a trustless platform. Agricultural Insurance: insure a farmer’s crops and claim damages thus replacing old and burdensome insurance processes, which could take up to months. Registers the crop loads, geo way-points and basic compliance information with carriers and registers the quality of the product, its price, location, and parties involved on the blockchain. Helps farmers supporting smaller farmers to enter the market.
How it's made
Challenges we ran into There is a lot of jargon to learn and get used to Substrate platform. The eco-system is huge and easy to get lost as there exists complicated naming conventions and plethora of projects. Getting use to its jargon takes time. Rust being the programming language and most of the developers have not acquaintance with the language makes it difficult to build/make things quickly. Interaction with the nodes are challenging as there is little to no documentation on how to create user accounts, CRUD transactions, etc. Example deployments of popular algorithms would have helped the developer eco-system: E.g., Proof-of-stake, Proof-of-origin Substrate sidecar is one of the interesting project with limited information on how to leverage and expose the RESTful APIs. Rust compilation times and fixing the compilation errors. Lack of debugging environment was challenging. This takes up considerable amount of time. Remote working environment: No sandbox environment for this buildathon makes it difficult to collaborate with team members that are geograhically seperated. Computational Resources: The hardware availability and unaffordable VMs for accomplishing project goals. The EC2 free tier had space issues "error: failed to write /home/ubuntu/substrate-node-template/target/release/wbudevice (os error 28) error: could not compile `frame-support` To learn more, run the command again with --verbose. warning: build failed, waiting for other jobs to finish... ^C Building [===================> ] 756/928: zstd-sys(build), blake3(build)" Ofcourse, last but not the least - buildathon during the corona pandemic situation :) EXPLAINATION of the HOW: https://krishi-iob.blogspot.com/2021/05/krishi-iob-its-been-great-so-far-status.html
