Your Digital Legacy on the Blockchain
About
The problem it solves The "Lost Crypto" Crisis & The Inefficiency of Traditional Inheritance The Problem: In the world of Web3, "Self-Custody" is a double-edged sword. While it gives us total control, it also creates a single point of failure: Death. Asset Loss: When a crypto holder passes away without sharing their private keys, their assets are lost forever on the blockchain. Billions of dollars in crypto are currently inaccessible due to this issue. Security Dilemma: Sharing private keys with family members while alive poses a major security risk (theft, accidental exposure, or trust issues). Traditional Friction: Traditional inheritance (wills, lawyers, notaries) is slow, expensive, paper-based, and often fails to account for digital assets held on-chain. How LegacyVault Solves It: LegacyVault provides a trustless, decentralized dead man's switch for your digital assets. Automation: Users set a "Check-In" interval (e.g., every 6 months). If they fail to check in (confirming they are active), the smart contract assumes they are incapacitated. Security: No private keys are ever shared. The protocol uses smart contracts to automatically transfer the rights/assets to pre-assigned beneficiary wallets. No Middleman: It eliminates the need for lawyers or expensive legal fees. The code is the executor.
How it's made
Challenges we ran into 1. Designing the "Dead Man's Switch" Logic: The biggest technical challenge was creating a reliable logic for the inactivity timer. We had to ensure that the "Check-In" mechanism was secure and couldn't be triggered by unauthorized wallets, while also ensuring the asset transfer happens seamlessly when the time expires. 2. Frontend & Blockchain Integration: Connecting our Next.js frontend with the smart contract provided some hurdles, specifically in handling real-time state updates (e.g., showing the correct "Time Remaining" for the user). We had to debug several hydration errors to ensure the UI perfectly matches the on-chain data. 3. Balancing Security with UX: We wanted LegacyVault to be accessible even to non-technical users (the heirs). Simplifying the claim process without compromising the strict security of a decentralized protocol was a tough design challenge we had to iterate on multiple times.
