    About

The problem it solves ## Problem Statement GreenVault tackles **two interconnected challenges** in the sustainability and carbon credit space: 1. **Lack of recognition for small-scale environmental projects** Many community-led or rural initiatives — such as reforestation, mangrove restoration, composting, or plastic recycling — create measurable environmental benefits but remain excluded from formal carbon markets. This exclusion happens because: * They lack the resources to meet complex certification standards. * They cannot afford centralized verification processes. * Their impact data is often siloed, inaccessible, or unverifiable. 2. **Low trust and transparency in carbon markets** Buyers, whether individuals or organizations, face difficulty identifying **credible and verifiable** offsets. Fraudulent or inflated claims undermine trust, while opaque systems make it hard to trace where funds go or what impact is achieved. --- ## Why This Problem Matters * **Economic impact:** Small and local sustainability projects miss out on financial incentives that could fuel expansion and create green jobs. * **Environmental impact:** Without recognition and monetization, these projects risk underfunding, slowing climate action progress. * **Trust in sustainability markets:** The credibility of carbon trading is essential for meaningful climate impact, yet current systems leave too much room for manipulation. --- ## How GreenVault Addresses This GreenVault uses blockchain to create a **transparent, on-chain carbon credit registry and trading marketplace**, ensuring: * **Verifiable legitimacy** through decentralized oracles and trusted data sources. * **Inclusive participation** for both buyers and small-scale project owners. * **Permanent, traceable records** for every carbon credit transaction. This approach not only increases market trust but also democratizes access to carbon trading, empowering underserved communities to turn environmental impact into tangible financial value.

    How it's made

Challenges we ran into 1. **Integrating zkLogin with Role Selection** * While zkLogin makes onboarding wallet-less users seamless, combining it with role selection (e.g., "Buyer" vs. "Project Owner") required designing a secure way to store and retrieve off-chain role metadata without breaking the login flow. 2. **Secure Off-Chain Data Storage** * Storing sensitive role and project details off-chain while ensuring encryption and privacy compliance required additional layers on top of the Oasis Confidential EVM. 3. **On-Chain Marketplace Logic** * Designing smart contracts for carbon credit minting, listing, and trading while keeping gas fees low and transactions secure was a balancing act. 4. **Data Verification for Carbon Credits** * Ensuring carbon credits are based on verifiable, trustworthy data meant figuring out how to integrate decentralized oracles while preventing fraudulent submissions. 5. **Minimalistic UI Without Losing Functionality** * Keeping the interface black-and-white and minimal while still guiding users effectively through complex actions like registering credits or trading required thoughtful UI/UX decisions. --- ## Strategic & User-Centric Challenges 6. **Defining Target Users** * The platform had to appeal to both climate-conscious buyers and smaller environmental project owners, requiring careful consideration of onboarding flows and feature sets. 7. **Balancing Decentralization & Usability** * A fully decentralized approach can be overwhelming for non-technical users, so simplifying the process without compromising trust was a constant design consideration. 8. **Time Constraints for Hackathon Build** * Building a secure, functional MVP with blockchain, zkLogin, and marketplace features in under a week meant making tough trade-offs on scope and prioritization.
