Zero Waste Delhi
♻️ Turn Trash into Triumph — One Bin at a Time!
About
The problem it solves **In urban environments, waste management is still largely manual, inefficient, and lacks citizen engagement.** 🚯 Bins today are "dumb" – they don’t track what is being dumped or by whom. 🎯 There's no incentive for people to practice proper waste habits. 📊 Municipalities don’t have access to real-time data for informed decision-making or resource allocation. **Zero Waste Delhi solves this by:** - Deploying smart bins that track waste quantity via IoT sensors. - Storing every waste disposal event securely on the blockchain for transparency. - Rewarding responsible citizens with eco-tokens, points, or collectibles. - Introducing a gamified leaderboard to make sustainability fun, competitive, and rewarding. - Providing municipalities with live dashboards and data for smarter waste planning.
How it's made
Challenges we ran into **While building Zero Waste Delhi, we ran into a few significant hurdles: ** **1. IoT Data Integration with Blockchain** Bridging real-world waste weight data from smart bins into the blockchain in real-time was tricky. We solved this by using a Node.js middleware server to validate and push data to a smart contract on the Lisk Sepolia Testnet. **2. Fair Reward System Design** Designing a non-abusable token reward system was challenging. We built a cooldown mechanism and per-user threshold to avoid misuse and spam entries. **3. Gas Optimization** Since Lisk is an Ethereum L2, we had to be efficient with how often smart contracts were called. We optimized by batching multiple entries and calling contracts only when necessary. **4. Frontend ↔ Blockchain Sync** Ensuring that UI always reflected blockchain updates in near real-time took effort. We used event listeners and polling to sync frontend state with the contract status. *Through continuous testing, debugging, and feedback, we were able to overcome these and ship a stable MVP.*
