About
Why are you participating for Based Africa? I am participating in Based Africa because I’m passionate about using decentralized finance (DeFi) to solve real-world problems in Africa, particularly in the area of group savings. Group savings, known as Ajo, Onidara, Contribution, Meeting, and other local names, is a widespread practice in Nigeria and across the continent. It's commonly used by business owners, students, freelancers, government and non-government workers. Despite its popularity, group savings often faces issues such as fund mismanagement, lack of transparency, trust problems, poor record-keeping, etc. The platform we’re building, **Circles**, directly addresses these challenges by utilizing blockchain technology. Circles ensures that funds are securely stored on-chain through smart contracts, eliminating the risks of fund loss, mismanagement, or incomplete records. Users can join or create their own circles, allowing them to save with friends, family, coworkers, or even large groups of users globally. This creates an opportunity for more flexible and scalable savings groups, all while ensuring that the savings process is fun, secure, and transparent. As the world evolves, even older generations, like my dad who used to engage in traditional group savings, can now easily perform simple transactions. **Circles** allows them to participate in decentralized savings that offer far more security and transparency than web2 methods. With Circles, people of all ages can join or create savings groups with confidence, knowing their funds are safe. As a Nigerian, I’ve experienced the importance of group savings firsthand and understand the issues that often arise from it. My motivation for participating in Based Africa is to help provide a solution that empowers people across the continent to save together securely and transparently, while also making the process enjoyable and scalable for all types of users. Additional Features **Circles** was started during the Buildathon, and we focused on implementing several key features to enhance the platform's functionality: 1. **User-Created Circles** We introduced the ability for users to create private circles for themselves, friends, or family, allowing for personalized saving experiences. This feature encourages collaboration and fosters a sense of community among users. 2. **Joining a Circle** Users can easily join existing circles, enabling them to participate in group savings with others. This feature helps broaden the user base and encourages collective saving efforts. 3. **Wallet Authentication** To ensure secure access to the platform, we implemented wallet authentication, allowing users to log in safely using their web3 wallets. This adds an extra layer of security and convenience for our users. 4. **Safe Deposits and Withdrawals** We added a feature for safe deposits and withdrawals, ensuring that funds are securely stored within the smart contract. This functionality reassures users that their savings are protected from mismanagement or loss. 5. **Friendly Competition** To make saving more engaging, we implemented a competitive element where users can set savings goals and compete with each other. This gamification aspect aims to motivate users and make saving a more enjoyable experience. 6. **Educational Resources** Recognizing the importance of user education, we added a library of tutorials and FAQs to help users understand how to navigate the platform and utilize its features effectively. 7. **Enhanced Security Measures** We focused on implementing robust security protocols, including regular audits and secure smart contract development, to ensure user funds are safe and to build trust in our platform.
How it's made
What challenges are you focusing on? We are concentrating on several key challenges associated with traditional group savings systems. First and foremost, there is a lack of trust. Many people have been burned by poorly managed savings groups, where funds are mishandled or misappropriated, leading to significant financial losses. This mistrust creates hesitance among individuals to participate in group savings, despite its cultural significance. Another major challenge is the **lack of transparency**. Participants often have no clear insight into how funds are managed or tracked, leading to confusion and disputes over contributions and withdrawals. This lack of clarity can result in disagreements and further erode trust within groups. Additionally, **record-keeping** is a persistent issue. Traditional methods often rely on manual entries and physical records, which are prone to errors, loss, or tampering. When records are lost or inaccurate, it creates a chaotic environment where members cannot verify their contributions or the status of the funds. Lastly, **security concerns** remain a significant obstacle. Many individuals fear losing their savings due to scams or fraud, especially when dealing with centralized platforms that lack robust security measures. These challenges not only hinder personal financial growth but also impact community cohesion, as many people rely on these savings groups for collective financial goals. By participating in Base, I aim to bring awareness to these issues and find effective ways to address them through innovative solutions. How does your submission address this challenge? Our submission addresses the pressing challenges faced by traditional group savings in my community through Circles. Many individuals have experienced losses due to scams or poorly managed savings groups, resulting in a pervasive mistrust of these systems. Circles leverages blockchain technology to provide a secure and transparent solution. By utilizing smart contracts, Circles ensures that funds are securely stored on-chain, minimizing risks of loss or mismanagement. All transactions are recorded transparently, allowing users to track their contributions and monitor the overall status of their savings group. This transparency fosters trust among participants, encouraging more people to engage in group savings. Furthermore, Circles is designed to educate users about decentralized finance and blockchain technology. The platform is user-friendly, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with digital tools can easily navigate it. This accessibility empowers older generations and individuals who may have been hesitant to participate in savings groups to engage confidently. The platform also fosters community cohesion by encouraging collaboration among users. Friends, family, and community members can work together toward shared financial goals, strengthening social ties and promoting a culture of mutual support. Moreover, Circles allows users to create private circles tailored to their specific needs. This flexibility enables more personalized and engaging savings experiences, whether for friends, family, or larger groups. In summary, Circles addresses the existing challenges in group savings while promoting a more inclusive and empowering financial ecosystem. Challenges we ran into In developing Circles, we anticipate several challenges: **User Resistance from Older Generations** Some older individuals are accustomed to traditional saving methods and may resist adopting a digital platform. To address this, we will create a user-friendly interface and provide educational resources, such as tutorials, to help them understand the benefits of Circles. Engaging community leaders to advocate for our platform will also build trust. **Technical Integration** As we continue development, integrating blockchain technology presents challenges related to security and scalability. We expect issues with smart contract development and transaction processing. To mitigate these, we will conduct thorough testing and seek guidance from experienced developers, implementing robust security measures, including regular audits. **Community Engagement** Building a user base requires extensive outreach. We plan to organize workshops to showcase Circles' benefits, directly addressing concerns and gathering feedback. Leveraging social media and partnerships with local organizations will help us reach a wider audience. By addressing these challenges proactively, we are confident that Circles will become a trusted platform for group savings, transforming how our community saves together.
