Why are you participating for Based Africa? Blochealth is participating in Based Africa to address critical challenges in healthcare, including improper record-keeping, expired, and counterfeit drugs, which affect millions of people globally. In Africa alone, counterfeit drugs account for nearly 42% of all medications, contributing to thousands of preventable deaths each year. By leveraging Base, Blochealth seeks to transform the healthcare system into one that is efficient, transparent, and secure. As one healthcare professional shared; "Blochealth is the future of healthcare, bringing trust and safety where it matters most." This initiative aligns with Base's vision of bringing 1 billion people Onchain and fostering innovation that benefits communities.
How it's made
What challenges are you focusing on? Blochealth tackles three major challenges in the healthcare sector: 1. Improper record-keeping – An estimated 56% of healthcare errors stem from poor data management, resulting in misdiagnosis and incorrect treatments. 2. Counterfeit drugs – The World Health Organization reports that counterfeit drugs lead to over 100,000 deaths annually in Africa alone. 3. Expired medications – Improper tracking of drug expiry dates leads to a 15% increase in the distribution of unsafe drugs. Blochealth is using Base to create a secure system for managing healthcare records and tracking pharmaceuticals, ensuring safety and efficiency at every step. How does your submission address this challenge? Blochealth solves these issues by using Base’s secure, decentralized infrastructure to store and manage patient records, ensuring data integrity and accessibility. Our platform also integrates a supply chain verification system that tracks pharmaceutical products from manufacturers to patients, ensuring that all medications are authentic and safe to use. By eliminating the risk of counterfeit and expired drugs, Blochealth is protecting lives. "With Blochealth, patients can finally trust the medicines they take and the care they receive," said a satisfied user. Our goal is to empower healthcare providers with the tools they need to deliver safe, effective care while fostering trust within the system. Challenges we ran into One challenge we faced was aligning blockchain technology with existing healthcare regulations, which often vary across countries. For this, we're in talks with some legal and healthcare experts, so we can ensure compliance while maintaining the benefits of decentralization. Another challenge was building trust with pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers. we'll be having some strategic partnerships to enable us develop a robust verification process that manufacturers and distributors could adopt, to ensure authenticity across the supply chain. Other challenges we faced incudes: - Free and easy access to onchain tools: Due to location (Nigeria), we needed to use VPN to access most of the tools needed for our project, it was quite overwhelming. - Team formation: Had issues getting the right team members but thanks to the "Based Africa Buildathon participant" group chat by Based Africa, we were able to get the right people to work with. - Video production: We made a movie; minted on Zora, to perfectly highlight the challenges in the healthcare system and the solutions BlocHealth is providing. We had challenges getting hospitals to approve of us using their venue as well as their Nurses for the shoot.
