    About

The problem it solves Whirl solves crypto's impossible trinity: it delivers price protection like stablecoins, value growth like volatile assets, and eliminates impermanent loss. All within a sustainable model that doesn't rely on endless new users or external value extraction. By creating a "stable-up coin" backed by its algorithmically increasing production cost, Whirl provides users a place to store value that only moves in one direction: up. With crypto slowly becoming an arena for copy/paste, short term cash grabs, projects with legitimate and novel tech often get overlooked by extreme hype on social media and the need for users to chase the next pump so they can get rich quick. This is not a criticism, but an honest state of play on the industry right now. Projects are being designed to capture attention quickly as they pit themselves up against the next, in a gladiator style PvP. Big players act like Lanistas, using the average user's dream of becoming the hero of the tale, and send them off to battle for their own gain. Whilst this does create extreme hype cycles and short term attention, it also creates negative opinions outside the cryptosphere, as new users get butchered by veteran warriors, never to return to the amphitheatre. This creates a significant barrier to mainstream adoption, as newcomers who experience losses often develop lasting negative impressions of the entire crypto space, sharing these experiences with potential users and reinforcing skepticism in the broader public. Whirl started out as a concept where we wanted to reward loyal users, and people who act in good faith, with the thrill of high reward assets, whilst removing the toxicity and liquidation risk that can come with PvP. **The issues we identified** 1. The forced choice between stability and growth in crypto assets. Stablecoins provide price protection but no appreciation, while volatile assets offer growth potential but with significant risk. 2. DeFi protocols that collapse when market conditions change or adoption slows, due to unsustainable "ponzinomic" models that require endless new participants. 3. Mining systems that leak value to external entities (like electricity providers and hardware manufacturers), rather than retaining it within the ecosystem. 4. Impermanent loss when providing liquidity, forcing users to choose between yield and capital preservation. 5. DeFi solutions that prioritise either simplicity (sacrificing functionality) or advanced features (becoming inaccessible to average users), rarely finding a balance between the two. **The Solution we proposed** Whirl Protocol solves these problems by creating a novel DeFi model that combines the benefits of both stable and dynamic assets. Whilst Whirl's underlying mechanics are sophisticated, we've wrapped them in a familiar mining concept and user-friendly interface that makes participation intuitive, even for those new to advanced DeFi concepts. The WHIRL token is algorithmically backed to its current production cost (Tunnel Cost) through a treasury system, providing price protection similar to stablecoins. Simultaneously, this production cost increases by at least 0.25% every 3 days, delivering predictable value growth. Unlike other DeFi innovations, Whirl is designed for long-term sustainability, operating effectively in both bull and bear markets without relying on constant new user inflow. All mining costs remain within the protocol, strengthening the treasury's ability to protect token value while enabling future growth. Through this mechanism, Whirl offers superior ROI compared to staking stablecoins (minimum 35.08% APY from fundamental value increases) without the impermanent loss risks associated with volatile asset staking. This creates a truly sustainable store of value with both protection and growth characteristics, previously thought impossible to combine in a single asset. By solving these fundamental contradictions, Whirl not only creates a new asset class but also establishes a framework for sustainable DeFi that could help transform how crypto is perceived and adopted by mainstream users. The protocol has now successfully mined over 400 bloks, demonstrating its resilience and stability through varying market conditions and user behaviours. This real-world performance validates our economic model and security mechanisms, proving that sustainable, non-ponzinomic DeFi is not just theoretical but achievable and operational today.

    How it's made

Challenges we ran into Developing Whirl presented several significant technical and design challenges over our 18+ month development journey, requiring innovative solutions at multiple layers of the stack. **Treasury Security Implementation** The algorithmic treasury is the heart of Whirl's security model, making it a prime target for potential attacks. We discovered multiple attack vectors including MEV, sandwich attacks, and flash loan vulnerabilities that could drain treasury funds. Our solution required innovation at the token contract level. We implemented a mechanism that automatically prevents any address except the Treasury from buying WHIRL when the price falls below the Tunnel Cost. This elegant approach completely neutralises front-running attacks while minimising disruption to normal trading. **Future Mining Exploitation** Early testing revealed a critical vulnerability where users could create tunnels far in the future, gaining an unfair advantage over miners in later periods due to Tunnel Cost increases. To solve this, we developed the concept of "Mining Units"; a normalised measure of mining power that ensures equal competition regardless of when mines are created. This required complex mathematical modelling to ensure that the probability of mining remained proportional to the real value contributed, not just the number of tunnels. **Balancing Complexity and Accessibility** Creating a system that combines stable and dynamic asset benefits required sophisticated economic mechanisms. However, we faced the challenge of making these mechanisms accessible to average users. We resolved this by wrapping complex protocols in a familiar "mining" framework that most crypto users immediately understand, while developing comprehensive documentation and tutorial videos for those wanting to understand the deeper mechanics. **Randomness and Fairness** Ensuring provably fair miner selection was crucial for protocol integrity. We evaluated several on-chain randomness solutions before implementing Chainlink VRF, then built a transparent verification system where users can confirm that the randomness received was properly applied in miner selection. This required careful event emission design and public data exposure to allow for complete auditability without compromising security. **Cross-Contract Coordination** The system's complexity required intricate coordination between 25+ contracts. Managing state across these contracts, especially during blok processing, created race conditions and atomicity issues. We solved this through a multi-step processing system with clear state transitions and event emissions, allowing for resilient, verifiable progression even if transaction ordering is manipulated. **Managing the Degen Rush** When we launched, we faced an unexpected challenge as a huge wave of degens aped into WHIRL without understanding the protocol's fundamentals. Despite our extensive documentation and warnings that WHIRL is designed as a long-term store of value rather than a speculative token, many bought in and quickly sold at a loss when miners who understood the protocol's mechanics sold into this initial demand. This created a storm of day-one FUD that threatened the project's reputation before it could demonstrate its true value proposition. We had to quickly pivot our communication strategy, engaging directly with critics, highlighting the protocol's unique features and long-term benefits. The most rewarding aspect of facing this challenge was seeing many initial critics return to the project with a deeper understanding. Many who initially lost money through speculative trading came back as informed participants. **Farcaster Frame Integration** Recognising the importance of reaching serious DeFi users where they already engage, we tackled the challenge of integrating with Farcaster. This required us to distill Whirl's complex mining functionality into a streamlined, frame-compatible interface while maintaining security and core functionality. We successfully implemented a solution that allows users to mine WHIRL directly through Farcaster/Warpcast without sacrificing the integrity of the protocol. This integration not only expands our user base but also demonstrates Whirl's versatility as a protocol that can seamlessly operate across different web3 social interfaces. Through rigorous testing and multiple audit cycles with respected security firms including Extropy.io, we've created a system that not only achieves its economic goals but is also robust against the full spectrum of modern DeFi attack vectors.
