About
Why are you participating for Based Africa? My motivation for participating in Based Africa stems from my deep-rooted connection to the continent and my desire to address some of the region's most critical challenges. Africa, with its rapidly growing population and tech ecosystem, still faces major hurdles when it comes to emergency response systems. I want to contribute to the solution, ensuring that no life is lost due to delayed responses, lack of communication, or inadequate resources during emergencies. MiCall is my way of giving back to the community. It’s more than just an app—it’s a lifeline for people in distress, providing them with immediate access to help at the press of a button. I’m passionate about leveraging technology to create sustainable, impactful change, and I believe that Based Africa can provide the platform and resources to scale MiCall, making it accessible to millions across the region. By participating, I aim to bring MiCall into the hands of those who need it most, and with the prize money, I’ll be able to accelerate the development and marketing of this life-saving platform, helping build safer communities across Africa. Additional Features One of the most important additions was the Power Button Feature, which allows users to instantly activate an emergency alert by pressing the power button multiple times in quick succession, ensuring they can access help quickly even in high-stress situations.Additionally, we incorporated a Video Recording Feature, enabling users to record video footage. helping responders assess the situation more effectively and documenting evidence. Authentication APIs can be integrated with blockchain technology to enhance user security, trust, and decentralized functionalities: 1. Decentralized Identity Management: users can authenticate themselves without needing to store personal data on centralized servers. Blockchain-based wallets (e.g., Metamask) can be used for user authentication. 2. Smart Contracts for Verification: Authentication data (such as user IDs or credentials) can be securely stored on the blockchain using smart contracts. 3. Immutable Records: The blockchain’s immutable nature ensures that user activities, such as sending alerts or responding to emergencies, are permanently recorded and cannot be altered. 4. Token-Based Access: MiCall could issue utility tokens that grant users access to premium features. Tokens could also be used to reward responders for assisting with emergencies. 5. Trustless Authentication: MiCall can eliminate the need for trust in third-party authentication services. Users would authenticate directly through their wallets, ensuring full control over their identity. Application Example: * Emergency Responder Verification: When an emergency alert is triggered, the responders could authenticate via a blockchain wallet. Smart contracts could verify the responder’s identity and credentials before allowing them access to user data or the alert. * Token-Based Subscriptions: Users could pay for subscriptions to MiCall’s services using tokens, with smart contracts managing the subscription process automatically and transparently.
How it's made
What challenges are you focusing on? One of the key challenges I’m addressing with MiCall is the lack of a reliable, quick-response emergency system in many parts of Africa. In rural areas, people often face delays in receiving help due to the distance between emergency responders and victims. Even in urban centers, finding nearby responders during an emergency is still a major issue. Another challenge is the inefficiency in notifying and organizing emergency responders. Current systems don’t effectively alert nearby individuals, leading to delayed action and preventable loss of life or property. Additionally, communication during emergencies is fragmented. People often rely on phone calls, which may not always go through, especially in high-stress situations. MiCall simplifies and streamlines this process by using geolocation technology to connect people in real-time with available responders in their vicinity. How does your submission address this challenge? MiCall addresses these challenges by creating a seamless, easy-to-use platform that connects users in emergency situations with nearby responders instantly. The app leverages geolocation to notify individuals within a close range of the user’s location, ensuring help arrives faster. Key features of MiCall include: Real-time emergency alerts: Users can send out alerts with one tap, detailing their emergency, location, and any additional information needed. Nearby responders: The app scans for responders within a specific radius, increasing the likelihood of immediate assistance. Notifications and history: Responders are notified instantly, and users can track the status of their alerts, ensuring transparency throughout the process. MiCall aims to reduce the time it takes for people in distress to get help, thus saving lives and mitigating the severity of emergencies. Challenges we ran into Throughout the development of MiCall, I encountered several hurdles, both technical and non-technical. One of the major technical challenges was integrating real-time geolocation services while ensuring that the system didn’t drain users’ phone batteries. I had to optimize the code and work with various APIs to balance functionality and efficiency. Additionally, designing a user-friendly interface that is intuitive enough for anyone to use during high-stress situations was another challenge. I wanted the app to be accessible for people of all ages, regardless of their tech savviness. To address this, I conducted several rounds of user testing and incorporated feedback into the design to ensure ease of use. On the non-technical side, marketing the app and gaining traction in local communities posed a challenge. I’m currently in the process of identifying key partners like hospitals and local emergency services to ensure wide-scale adoption and trust in the platform.
