About
The problem it solves MetaHead Arena: Revolutionizing Gaming with Blockchain MetaHead Arena combines competitive gaming with blockchain utility to solve several modern issues in gaming: - Lack of Player Ownership In traditional games, players don’t own their characters or items. MetaHead Arena solves this by turning characters into NFTs, giving players **true digital ownership and the ability to trade, sell, or auction them freely on the marketplace. - No Real Value for In-Game Currency Most games use currencies that have no value outside the game. This game introduces **ERC20-based game coins**, allowing players to **earn tokens with real-world value** and use them across the ecosystem. - Unfair or Predictable Reward Systems Traditional loot systems are often opaque or rigged. By using Chainlink VRF (Verifiable Random Function), MetaHead Arena ensures fair and transparent reward distribution for loot boxes and random rewards. - Limited Gameplay Modes in Blockchain Games Many blockchain games have basic or repetitive mechanics. MetaHead Arena breaks that pattern with offline, AI, and real-time online PvP gameplay — offering variety and accessibility. - No Progression System in Web3 Games Most Web3 games lack a meaningful progression loop. This game introduces a **leveling system** that **rewards skill and dedication**, motivating players to improve and stay engaged. - Stale Gaming Experience To keep things dynamic, MetaHead Arena adds: - Power-ups - Skill-based stats - Player rarity types: Common, Epic, Legendary These features introduce **strategic depth and competitive surprise**, creating a more engaging experience.
How it's made
Challenges we ran into # Technical & Team Challenges During MetaHead Arena Development Building MetaHead Arena came with a series of technical and collaborative challenges. Here's how we tackled them: --- ## 1. First Time Using a Game Engine It was our first time working with Phaser.js, which made implementing physics—especially gravity, collisions, and ball behavior—very difficult. After extensive testing and iterations, we successfully implemented Offline 1v1 and Player vs AI modes with reliable behavior inside the engine. --- ## 2. Replicating the Pixel-Style UI/UX The game featured a distinct pixel-art aesthetic that was hard to replicate using CSS or Tailwind CSS. To address this: - Parts of the original designs were rendered as edited background images. - Achievable UI elements were implemented with real code, maintaining visual consistency as shown in our screenshots. --- ## 3. Team Communication and Losing a Key Member Midway through development, our blockchain and Web3 frontend developer left the team, which affected our development timeline. Despite this setback, we maintained focus and delivered functional offline modes and completed most Web3 integrations. --- ## 4. AI and Ball Physics Bug In offline modes, we encountered a bug where the ball could get stuck on the net or float above the goal. We attempted to fix this by sloping the top crossbar to guide the ball down, but due to time constraints, we couldn't perfect it. It remains a known issue we're committed to fixing in future updates. --- ## 5. Socket.IO Integration and Real-Time Multiplayer Implementing real-time multiplayer with Socket.IO was challenging but successfully achieved. We had to: - Cover all user stories and edge cases. - Establish rules to determine ball control authority across different network states. - Ensure smooth synchronization between players in real-time matches. --- ## 6. First-Time Working with The Graph, CCIP, and Chainlink Functions We were new to combining Chainlink CCIP, Functions, and VRF within a live game engine. After diving deep into documentation and Chainlink examples, we managed to: - Write and deploy working smart contracts. - Integrate on-chain randomness for box rewards and player generation. --- ## 7. UI Structuring and Clean Architecture Most UI challenges were addressed by following: - A component-based architecture. - A clean Next.js folder structure, which improved code maintainability and scalability. --- ## 8. Marketplace Pixel UI Recreating the Marketplace UI with pixel-level accuracy was extremely difficult. Nonetheless, our frontend team managed to match ~95% of the original design, using creative CSS techniques and assets. --- ## 9. VRF Chest Redemption and NFT Player Handling Integrating VRF-based chest openings, MetaMask interactions, and NFT player rewards required careful planning. We also implemented: - Displaying redeemed players in the Player Select screen. - Verifying match outcomes to reward XP and coins correctly. --- ## 10. Online Game UI Polish While we successfully implemented the core Socket.IO functionality for online multiplayer, we didn't have sufficient time to fully polish and optimize the online game UI to match the quality standards we achieved in other parts of the application. The online gameplay is functional, but the user interface could benefit from further refinement in future iterations. --- Most Web3 functionality was fully completed, demonstrating successful integration of blockchain technologies with real-time gaming mechanics.
