Hearing AID using Digital Signal Processing

    Redefining Sound, Restoring Lives.

    About

The problem it solves Modern hearing aids often come with high costs, limited customization, and inadequate real-time sound optimization for varying environments. Traditional designs may also lack intelligent filtering and adaptability to individual hearing loss patterns. 🔍 What People Can Use It For Affordable and Customizable Hearing Assistance Users can experience real-time sound enhancement and noise reduction, tailored to their specific hearing loss, without needing expensive commercial devices. Safe Listening in Dynamic Environments The system filters background noise (e.g., traffic, crowds), making it safer to listen while walking or crossing roads. User-Friendly Setup and Real-Time Simulation Thanks to Altair Embed and Composer, developers and researchers can easily simulate and test DSP filters and algorithms for hearing enhancement before deploying to hardware. Prototype for Smart Wearables and Assistive Tech It acts as a base for developing smart earbuds, hearing glasses, or mobile-connected assistive devices using embedded DSP systems. ⚙️ How It Makes Tasks Easier Real-Time Noise Filtering Removes or suppresses unwanted sounds (e.g., wind, machinery) using digital filters, improving speech clarity. Personalized Audio Processing Simulated via Altair, filters can be tuned per user’s audiogram or preferences. Rapid Prototyping Without Hardware Dependency Altair tools allow engineers to simulate and visualize sound processing without needing full hardware setups, reducing development time. Educational Value for DSP Learners Useful for students and researchers exploring DSP concepts like FFT, IIR/FIR filters, and feedback cancellation through practical application. Smart Contract Address(es) Not Applicable – This project does not use blockchain or smart contracts. It is a DSP-based simulation project using Altair Embed and Altair Composer.

    How it's made

Challenges we ran into Developing a digital hearing aid system using Altair came with several technical and practical hurdles: 🔧 1. Real-Time Signal Processing Accuracy Ensuring low latency audio processing was challenging, especially during simulations. The system needed to filter noise without distorting speech or introducing delay. 🔉 2. Designing Effective DSP Filters Choosing the right type of filters (e.g., FIR vs IIR) and tuning their parameters for different environments (quiet room, noisy street) required multiple iterations. Simulating feedback cancellation and adaptive filtering in real-world scenarios was complex. 🧠 3. Limited User Customization Logic Creating a system that adapts to different hearing profiles (audiograms) without ML was a limitation. Incorporating dynamic environment detection required more advanced logic or AI integration. 🛠️ 4. Hardware Integration Readiness While Altair allowed easy simulation, porting the design to embedded hardware (DSP boards or microcontrollers) posed compatibility and performance challenges. Real-time performance on low-power chips remains a key challenge for real-world deployment. 👂 5. Subjective Hearing Perception Testing sound quality and clarity is subjective; what sounds clear to one user may not work for another. Simulated environments don’t fully capture real-world hearing loss conditions.
