About
Why are you participating for Based Africa? As Africa continues to develop its digital economy, issues around identity verification, privacy, and access to essential services become more pressing. Many Africans lack formal identification, making it difficult to access financial, healthcare, or educational services. Our project aims to contribute to the decentralization movement that empowers individuals to own and control their identities without relying on centralized authorities. Base’s low transaction fees and focus on scalability align perfectly with the needs of regions like Africa where low-cost, scalable solutions can have significant impact. By providing decentralized identity verification, this project can help bridge the gap, offering secure, verifiable identities across multiple platforms.
How it's made
What challenges are you focusing on? We are addressing the challenge of identity verification and privacy in regions where formal ID systems are either lacking or hard to access. In many African countries, large parts of the population are unbanked and undocumented, making it difficult for them to access essential services. This challenge also extends to fraud prevention and secure authentication when interacting with decentralized applications (dApps). How does your submission address this challenge? The Decentralized Identity Verification System (DIVS) uses the Base Blockchain to allow users to verify their identity in a self-sovereign way, ensuring that they own and control their personal data. It leverages smart contracts and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) to provide identity verification without exposing sensitive information. The solution helps reduce the reliance on centralized authorities for identity management, especially in regions where access to such services is limited. It provides a scalable, transparent, and secure way for individuals to prove their identity across dApps, unlocking access to services like banking, education, and healthcare. Challenges we ran into Technical Hurdle: Integrating Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) was technically challenging due to their complexity. We resolved this by starting with simpler cryptographic methods and gradually implementing ZKPs as a future feature. Scalability: Ensuring the system scales efficiently across a blockchain environment with minimal gas fees required optimizations. We used Base Blockchain's high scalability to address this. User Experience: For users in underdeveloped regions, access to high-tech solutions can be limited, so we focused on building a simple and mobile-friendly interface to increase accessibility.
