    DeBoot

Decentralized Network Boot. Boot images fetched from Swarm/IPFS running in firmware.

    About

The problem it solves Network boot is a way to get an operating system (OS) running on your device without a bootable USB drive (or other removable media). With 10Gbps and even 100Gbps network adapters increasingly available, this can even be the fastest method to boot a device without an OS image on a storage device attached to a PCIe bus. Storing the OS image remotely saves the user some LAN management tasks: instead of maintaining all these images themselves, they could pull signed images from a public repository. However, you then face all the liveness issues (e.g. censorship) of centralized remote hosting! Decentralized storage solves these problems, and also is really cool. Also, some of our solutions remove the need to have a local "bridge" server at all.

    How it's made

Challenges we ran into Running stuff without an OS is hard! We needed to get Swarm running entirely in firmware. No one has written a WiFi driver for GRUB or UEFI, so we had to improvise (because we have no device with both a screen and an Ethernet port).
